Insurance & Coverage (Ontario Private Practice)

Understanding how your benefits apply to mental health services shouldn't be a stressful process. While we do not offer direct billing, many extended health insurance plans in Ontario provide full or partial coverage for therapy sessions led by Registered Psychotherapists (RP) or Registered Psychotherapists (Qualifying). Because every insurance provider and policy structure is different, we have compiled the answers to our most frequently asked questions below. This guide is designed to help you easily navigate your benefits, understand your coverage limits, and confidently manage your session receipts for reimbursement.

Is psychotherapy covered by insurance in Ontario?
Many extended health benefit plans in Ontario cover psychotherapy services, but coverage depends on your specific plan.

Our services are not covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP), as we are a private practice. However, accessibility is important to us. We offer a reduced-fee graduate intern therapy program and can help you explore insurance friendly options.

Our intake team is also available to discuss your needs and help you find an option that fits your budget.

Coverage often includes services provided by registered professionals such as College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) members (Registered Psychotherapists), Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (Registered Social Workers), and College of Psychologists of Ontario (Psychologists). It is best to check your plan for details.
Most insurance plans do not require a referral, but some may. It’s best to confirm with your insurance provider.
Coverages vary. Some plans reimburse a percentage (e.g., 80–100%), while others provide a set annual amount (e.g., $500–$4,000 per year).
At this time, we don’t offer direct billing. After each session, you’ll make your payment and receive a detailed receipt that you can easily submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement. We know navigating insurance can feel confusing, so we’re always happy to help answer questions and point you in the right direction. Coverage and timelines can vary, so it’s a good idea to check with your provider about your specific plan.
Typically, you’ll need a receipt that includes the therapist’s name, professional designation, license/registration number, and session details.
You can still access therapy by paying out of pocket. At our clinic, we offer sliding scale fees based on income or reduced rates with supervised graduate level interns.
Many insurance providers in Ontario cover virtual therapy sessions, but it’s important to verify this with your specific plan.

Can I use multiple benefits (e.g., through a partner)?
Yes, in many cases you can coordinate benefits between plans to maximize coverage. Check with your provider for coordination rules.
